This year was the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Tyler and I went up to see it the weekend after 4th of July, on the 6th. We stayed with some very hospitable people, my dad's cousin, Jimmy and his wife, Debbie. Gary, Jimmy's brother, also came up. He had a little farther drive though coming from South Carolina. It was so hot and sunny, 93 degrees with hardly any cloud cover. Lots of people were having a hard time with heat strokes and such. However, it was neat to be there on such a big anniversary. We stayed well hydrated and out of the sun with our umbrella as much as possible.
They had a mortar demonstration. They had 4 teams who each shot off a 40 pound ball. Their first goal was to get it as close to the flag as possible but keep it in the roped box section. When the mortar hit, it was just like throwing a shot-put. It simply landed. Their second goal was to shoot at the same time and hit near a flag that was further out. This time though, they used the balls that were used back in the Civil War. When they hit, they exploded and made a huge crater in the ground. It was pretty spectacular.
