St. Croix

Fort Frederik, St. Croix, Virgin Islands

Fort Frederik was built in 1760 and named in honor of the reigning Danish monarch Frederik V. The fort was built to fortify the Danes new acquisition of the island St. Croix, protect it's commercial shipping and encourage the settlement of Frederiksted. Fort Frederik had other interesting and important roles in history. The fort's cannons fired the first (although unofficial) salute to the new flag of the United States on October 25, 1776. And on July 3, 1848 Governor-General Peter Von Scholten emancipated the slaves on the island. The fort went on to house a number of government agencies over the years, including the fire and police stations and a jail. The fort was renovated and restored to it's original design in 1976.

I was in solitary confinement. I was only given bread and water through that little hole behind me.
